Fulton fifth grade students show items collected during their food drive

Fulton Elementary School fifth graders led a school-wide food collection drive after recently learning more in their class about food insecurity.

Students in Ms. Johanna Anderson’s class have been specifically researching childhood hunger, its effects on children in Ohio, in the United States and throughout the world as well as the important role that food banks play in alleviating food insecurity.

Bringing their research to life, Ms. Anderson’s class put together a food collection drive that involved the whole school to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign & Logan Counties.

In the food bank’s tri-county service area, 1 in 4 residents struggle with hunger. The food bank says the percentage of children who are food insecure is even greater.

In 2023, the food bank served more than 60,000 individuals — 18,400 of whom were children.

This summer, the SCSD will host a summer food program for students at several locations with free daily lunch. More details will be announced to families at a later date.
