A Lagonda student presents a project to create a mural on the bike path

Springfield City School District students who are part of the ‘Legacy 24’ clubs, in partnership with the City of Springfield recently presented their proposals for community improvement projects.

Through funding provided by The Springfield Foundation and The Crabill Family Foundation, each Legacy 24 club is awarded $2,000 and must create, plan and complete a project in the Springfield community related to beautification, safety or neighborhood improvement.

There are six SCSD buildings participating in projects this year: Fulton, Lagonda, Hayward, Schaefer, The School of Innovation and Springfield High School. Each of the schools presented their project proposals this week to District and City officials.

Fulton proposed hosting a neighborhood celebration, as well as an outdoor display of The 8 Habits from The Leader in Me program. Lagonda pitched creating a mural along the bike path near Mitchell Boulevard.

Hayward students presented their idea to transform the school courtyard into an outdoor learning space. Schaefer proposed hosting a neighborhood celebration to raise awareness about mental health and providing attendees with resources for stress relief.

The School of Innovation (SOI) would like to beautify the entrance of Selma Road Park and create a mural on the side of the park’s shelter house. Springfield High School students proposed building a shelter on the bike path near SHS, providing a safe place for students who utilize the bike path to travel to and from school.

The proposals are under advisement and final decisions will be known in the coming weeks.
