‘Storytime’ was extra special for Clark Early Learning Center this week. The preschool students were read their favorite stories by first responders from the Springfield Fire Rescue Division and Springfield Police Division as part of Read Across America Week.

Over a dozen current and retired first responders read to Springfield City School District’s youngest learners. After reading, the students enjoyed asking questions about the jobs of the firefighters and police officers.

The goal of the national, weeklong initiative is to celebrate reading and motivate children to build literacy skills. March is also designated as National Reading Month.

Across the SCSD, several other buildings have found creative ways to celebrate, including literacy-themed spirit weeks. For example, as part of its spirit week, Snyder Park Elementary had a ‘Read My Shirt’ themed day that encouraged students and staff to wear a shirt that others could read.
