The Springfield City School District is offering new State Tested Nursing Aide (STNA) high school courses for the 2025-2026 school year. The courses align with the District’s Healthcare Career Pathway. (For more information on all Career Pathways, please visit the District website).
The STNA program is made up of 2 courses: Medical Terminology/Patient Centered Care and STNA Certification. In the first course, students will learn the basics of caring for patients, bathing, feeding, catheter care, administering patient care supplies, performing safety checks, ensuring cleanliness, monitoring vital signs and reading EKGs. In the second course, students will prepare to take the Ohio State Tested Nursing Aide certification and acquire skills to work as nurse aides in long-term care facilities, hospitals and other healthcare settings.
STNA courses are available to juniors and seniors. A new lab space in the Health Center at Springfield High was created to assist with hands-on learning experiences.
In addition to the new Healthcare Pathway, students will also have a separate opportunity to expand their healthcare knowledge via the launch of the Medical Mentors program.
This extracurricular experience will join Ohio State University medical students with Springfield High School students who have an interest in a potential healthcare career. The OSU students will visit SHS once per month during the school day to offer mentorship, share experiences and give advice to the high school students.
