After School Programming for Students in Grades 4-8

Make: October | Safe Scientists & Foamy Fun

Join us in October for exciting science experiments! In this session, students will step into the role of junior scientists as they learn the importance of lab safety -- suiting up with googles, gloves and careful procedures. Once safety is mastered, they'll dive into hands-on experiments, including a crowd-favorite: Elephant Toothpaste Reaction! With a mix of curiosity and creativity, students will see science come to life through foamy eruptions, colorful chemistry and safe, but exciting discoveries. Sign up now to reserve your spot!

  • Session 1: October 14, 21 & 28

  • Session 2: October 16, 23 & 30

What's a MakerSpace?

A makerspace is a place where students and adults can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials.  Makers are artists, crafters, knitters, seamstresses, builders, programmers, engineers, hackers, painters, woodworkers, tinkerers, inventors, bakers, graphic designers and more.  In makerspaces, people share tools, skills, and ideas, and often work together on projects. In these spaces, learning is hands-on, collaborative, and focuses on bringing together people to explore and create around projects that interest and excite them.  Makerspaces are sometimes called FabLabs, HackerSpaces and TechShops.

Make: Springfield has the tools, machines, workspace, and encouragement to help you invent, design and build your next project.  We provide resources, tools, and space for interest-driven projects that develop skills, build persistence, and build creative skills. Make: Springfield exposes youth and adults to tools and materials, and encourages them to engage in playing and tinkering, with their peers, alone, and with mentors (members of the CCED and YouMedia teams).  Creativity is always the priority.  The goal is not only to embrace technology, crafts and fine arts, but to cultivate problem solving, and collaboration.

Slider is playing

We hold programming where students of any age can come and learn to create things, whether that be a robot, 3D printed animals, eTextiles or electrical circuits with flashing lights and motors.  All workshops are open to the public and all students are welcome to attend.
