Wearing pink and their biggest smiles, Lagonda Elementary students and staff held a walk around their school building this week in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The likelihood of women in the United States developing Breast Cancer is about 1:8; however, the show of support is personal for the Lagonda school community. First Grade Teacher, Laurie Hammontree is celebrating five years of being ‘cancer-free.’ Hammontree led the walk, giving out hugs to students as they paraded by.
Ms. Hammontree’s story is one that other women can learn from – with no family history, she said she was shocked when her first mammogram revealed indications of Breast Cancer.
“I had an enormous support team from school to my second job and my family,” Hammontree has previously said about her cancer journey. “When I say I have the best, I really mean it.”
In addition to the walk, Lagonda students and staff also decorated Ms. Hammontree’s hallway with pink ribbon decorations.
