The Springfield City School District Board of Education is starting 2026 with new leadership, a familiar face and a continued commitment to serving Springfield students and families.

Susan Samuels officially joined the Board following her election by Springfield voters in November. While this marks her first term as a Board member, Samuels is no stranger to the District. She brings more than four decades of experience in Springfield schools, having served as both a teacher and administrator at South High School, Clark Junior High School, Schaefer Junior High School, Franklin Junior High School and Hayward Middle School.

The Board also named new leadership for the year, naming Joan Elder as Board President and Peg Foley as Vice President. Both are returning members who bring continuity and experience to their new roles.

Carol Dunlap was sworn in following her successful reelection and continues her service on the Board, which she joined in 2021. Jamie Callan rounds out the five-member Board as a returning member.

January is recognized nationally as School Board Appreciation Month, a time to acknowledge the role school board members play in setting district vision, supporting student success and serving as a bridge between schools and the community.
