Responsible Reopening Update for July 31, 2020

Responsible Reopening

July 31, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Please find below, additional information as it relates to the Responsible Reopening of the Springfield City School District on August 26, 2020. The District will continue to provide up-to-date details as information is finalized.

The SCSD continues to be thankful for our supportive parents and families, as well as committees made up of teachers, association members, and administrators who have come together to find solutions to details and countless logistical processes. Those areas of focus include, but are not limited to, lunchtime, recess, bathroom visits, busing, entry/exit for individual buildings, athletic facility requirements, online curriculum and, much more. All involved continue to take this process seriously, knowing that every decision must be made in the best interest of our students. As always, it is encouraged to check the SCSD website at for the most current information.

In our efforts to continue to be responsive to questions from our families, the District now has an email address for the submission of new questions. Please email all questions to Questions and answers will be added to our FAQ document on an ongoing basis. As a reminder, the FAQ document can be accessed here.

It is important that parents of students entering Kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year complete the online enrollment process and upload the appropriate documentation. Parents may begin contacting the school that your child will attend on August 4 to schedule student assessments that will take place August 26-28. Kindergarten registration materials and an updated calendar are found here.

Reminder! To Opt-In to OnCourse, the District’s 100% Online Education Program for the first Semester of the 2020-21 school year, you must sign your child up by midnight on Friday, July 31, 2020, here. No additional action is needed at this time for students planning to attend 100% in-school instruction.

The Clark Preschool Team is working nonstop to prepare for the arrival of students in a few weeks. As the state regulated ratios continue to change, plans continue to be updated and reevaluated. Your continued patience is appreciated as we, once again, regroup to discuss new guidelines that were released this week. Please continue to monitor the District website and social media for preschool updates.

For step-by-step instructions regarding the internal process for a confirmed case of COVID-19 in a school building, or a suspected contact by a teacher/student/students in a classroom, please review the procedural flowchart located here.

Confusion continues to arise regarding the SCSD color coded operations chart found on page 12 of the Responsible Reopening Plan. It is important to note that the District pandemic based education conditions ARE NOT the same as Ohio’s COVID-19 Advisory System.

The District meets weekly with the Clark County Health Commissioner and will operate based on current community health conditions and based on guidance from the Clark County Combined Health District (CCCHD). Potential changes to pandemic based education conditions (color levels) will occur on a building by building basis, based on guidance from the CCCHD.

The Springfield City School District is pleased to offer School Age Child Care services to K-6 students for the 2020-21 school year. Online registration and additional details will be communicated to you soon. If you have questions, please contact the SACC Office at 937-505-2818.

To simplify school supply lists this year, the lists have been reduced and combined for each grade, K-6,  District-wide. There are no individual supply lists per building. Supply lists can be viewed here. Please note, students who attend Resource Classrooms have supply lists that will be provided separately.

The SCSD Student Services Department is working diligently to prepare for our students to return to school soon. Plans are being finalized to support students and teachers through a combination of virtual and face to face services. Staff will use PPE and District-approved cleaning procedures between services to students to reduce the risk of exposure.

In addition, the Student Services Team continues to work individually with families of students who are medically fragile or immunocompromised to determine the safest and most effective way to provide services to those families and students. Please know that it is recognized that the return to school is an emotional decision for many families who wish for their students to return, while also seeking to ensure student health and safety.

The goal of  the Student Services Team is to meet the needs of all learners through the format that their family has chosen. If you have specific concerns regarding your student on an IEP,  please contact the Student Services Office at 937-505-2859, between 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM weekdays. Our is happy to connect you with resources and answer questions. Your patience is always appreciated as we navigate to safely reopen the SCSD.

Please continue to visit the SCSD website at for updates.

Today’s video update highlights the information found in the parent update.

Again, thank you for making hard decisions, asking important questions, and reading the updates to stay informed. After we review OnCourse enrollment numbers after the July 31 deadline, the District will be able to provide additional details, having a better understanding of class sizes, food services needs, and other important information to make the best decisions possible to meet the needs of our students, families, and staff.
