May 8, 2020

Dear SCSD Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the last two full weeks of the school year, I hear a collective sigh of relief. What a unique and strange time in the history of our nation! I continue to reflect daily on how proud I am of our Springfield family. As a community, we came, we saw, and we conquered an overnight change from in-person to distance learning. I could not be more proud of our students, teachers, and parents.

As stated last week, it is very important that you read weekly updates in their entirety, as we will continue to answer questions many of you have as we complete the 2019-20 school year.

Back to School Immunizations

Our school nursing staff reminds families that the start of summer is the perfect time to schedule back to school immunizations. Call your family physician or the Clark County Combined Health District at (937) 390-5600 to schedule an appointment.

Events and Facilities

Until we receive further instruction from Governor DeWine, the SCSD buildings, playgrounds and athletic facilities must remain closed. Facility closures are ordered from the Ohio Department of Health and are necessary to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus and to protect our communities.

Food Distribution

As we approach the end of the school year, please note that the final food distribution will occur on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. The District is working with the Second Harvest Food Bank to provide sites for a summer feed program and details will be provided soon.

Postcards were sent to senior students this week to notify them of their assigned day/time to walk across the stage at SHS and be highlighted in our Graduation video. The coverage will be shared on May 30, 2020. Graduation filming will begin on Thursday, May 14 and end on Friday, May 22.

Summer Programming

Under the current guidelines, the District’s summer camps and programming are on hold until further notice. We will follow the latest directives when determining the status of summer conditioning programs for our student-athletes, as well as marching band. More information will be shared about these programs as we receive it.

Summer School

With the current building closure orders, the District will offer all regular summer school classes, virtually. More information will be shared with families in the coming weeks.

Next School Year

No specific decisions have been made at this time on the status of our buildings reopening in August. The state continues to monitor the status of the COVID-19 outbreak and our ability to resume normal activities.

In recent press briefings, Governor DeWine made it clear that no decision has been made about the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Our District administrators are planning and consulting with other education leaders and public health officials for alternatives to comply with the Governor’s most current orders and maintain a healthy environment for staff and students. We are planning for various scenarios, including a regular return to school, continued remote learning, or a blend of the two.

Today’s video update highlights the information found in the parent update. Please continue to work with our team, be patient, and help us meet the needs of your family.

We are resilient, we have hope, #WeAreSpringfield #InThisTogetherWildcats.

Sincerely,

Robert F. Hill, Ed.D.
